Here Ryan blogs about politics, film, TV, history, religion, science, books, theater, digital media, LGBT issues, Bushwick & Williamsburg, New York City, and anything else he's interested in at the moment. Oh, and he'll probably talk a lot about himself.

I’m proud to support my friend Carlos Menchaca for New York City Council. I met Carlos through the Lambda Independent Democrats of Brooklyn and have gotten to know him well over the last four years.
He’s been a strong advocate for Brooklyn, working with Borough President Marty Markowitz, and a leader in the LGBT community as Speaker Quinn’s LGBT and HIV/Aids liaison. He’s always impressed me with his intelligence, energy, character and commitment to New York.
I’m proud to co-host an LGBT fundraiser for Carlos in Brooklyn on Sunday, March 10th from 1pm - 4pm. All the details are on the Facebook event page. If you can’t make it, connect and donate to Carlos on his website.
Happy to join Reshma Saujani at her debate watching party in New York City on October 16th. It’s going to be a great event, with lots of cool people, supporting an exciting candidate. Tickets start at just $50, buy them today.
Friends,
For over a year now, I’ve been working with a great team to develop a new community outreach program for The Deconstructive Theatre Project (where I’m on the board of directors) called DTPe. Our first event, Evocative Objects is just a day away and is going to be super awesome. So if you are free on Saturday at 8pm, and if seeing a found object band, watching a foley performance to poetry, free food and beer, all in a junk warehouse sounds fun to you… then you should check it out.
We are offering a discount code, so be sure to get in on it.
Follow the link: http://www.deconstructivetheatreproject.org/subscribe-to-dtpe/ and type in dtpe1 in the discount code box for an exclusive $20 entry into the event.
And scroll through the brochure, it’s pretty stunning and you can learn more about our other upcoming events. I’ve grabbed a few screenshots from the brochure for the images above.
My congresswoman, Rep. Nydia Velazquez, is being primaried by a local machine party hack. She’s been a great representative and has fought for the residents of my neighborhood, Bushwick, and for a broad, inclusive progressive agenda.
If you’re in these neighborhoods, please get out and vote for her in the Democratic primary on Tuesday, June 26th: SUNSET PARK • RED HOOK • BROOKLYN HEIGHTS • DUMBO • DOWNTOWN BROOKLYN • LOWER EAST SIDE • WILLIAMSBURG • BUSHWICK
For more info, or to volunteer, please see the below email from my friend Carlos Menchaca.
I never do this - but this is a tight race!
Please share this info with your friends, next Tuesday 6/26 is a very important Democratic Primary election date!
Congresswoman Nydia Velazquez has been a friend of the LGBT community and champion of progressive ideals for her entire career in Congress. WE MUST RE-ELECT HER.
Among other great things, Nydia has:Nydia has always put the needs of her constituents first by advocating for affordable housing, securing funding for better schools, and fighting for a comprehensive immigration policy that keeps families together. She has been a strong and independent voice for her district.
- fought for the repeal the Defense of Marriage Act;
- endorsed the enhancement of hate crime legislation;
- advocated for increased funding for HIV/AIDS treatment and prevention;
- intervened to prevent immigrant LGBT families from being torn apart;
- defended reproductive rights for women;
- supported the repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell; and
- co-sponsored the Employment Non-Discrimination Act.
Today, Nydia, one of the few Latina voices in Congress, needs our help. She is in a very competitive Primary race, so all of us in the progressive community must stand with her to make sure she wins.

Some of my favorite Instagrams, that I took around Bushwick this weekend.
Some pictures from last night, where Tommy Wallach and I took a bar tour of Bushwick. These photos are from The Loom, Life Cafe, & The Narrows.
A new store has opened up in Bushwick, Brooklyn that focuses exclusively on Pope John Paul II swag. I’m getting my mom a gift certificate.
Took some of these pictures strolling around Bushwick this week.
My favorite is the new mural (at the top) that’s near the Morgan stop. The bike with The Sound of Music mysteriously propped up next to it is a close second. Love my hood.
Update: More on the mural here.
What happens to New York City Christmas trees after Christmas.
All photos taken by me on my iPhone 4S around Manhattan and Bushwick, Brooklyn.
Pictures I took in the West Village, Manhattan and Bushwick, Brooklyn, from 3am-4am on Saturday, January 21st. It had recently begun to snow.
Images from Brooklyn Museum’s HIDE/SEEK: Difference and Desire in American Portraiture, showing until February 12th.
I spent yesterday afternoon at the Brooklyn Museum and fell in love with Hide/Seek. There’s something very special about being able to walk though the last two hundred years of American art and seeing the sexual culture evolve.
The amount of artistic talent lost during the AIDS crisis is always so overwhelming and it’s something that’s clearly on display here. You’ll see haunting images like AA Bronson’s 1994 portrait, included above, of his partner Felix who had just passed away. But, what’s also on display are wonderful pre-aids portraits and stories of LGBT pioneers from Romaine Brooks (above) to Walt Whitman. It really makes me look forward to the next hundred years.
